چکیده
Abstract Trust is a key part of any political system. Given the very different experiences Black people and White in United States, it likely that nature contours trust varies widely from one racial group to other. In this article, we take advantage specially commissioned 2018 survey compare American legislative institutions (Congress state legislatures). Thanks an oversample, also are able zero on variations across respondents, making possible identify variables push up or down within demographic. Our findings indicate that, relative Whites, individuals significantly more trusting Congress who go church tend be while those have experienced racism their lives less trusting.

In Defense of Legislatures
It is not every day that a scholar stoops to defend legislatures. Oh sure, lots of political theorists rush to the defense of democracy in the abstract, but they often have little to say about actual democratic practice. By contrast, empirical political scientists (and “positive political theorists”) have lavished attention on the institutions of democratic governance such as legislatures (part...
متن کاملThe New Racial Calculus: Electoral Institutions and Black Representation in Local Legislatures
In this study we revisit the question of black representation on city councils and school boards using a novel substantive and methodological approach and longitudinal data for a sample of over 300 boards and councils. Conceptualizing black representation as a two-stage process, we fit Mullahy’s hurdle Poisson models to explain whether and to what extent blacks achieve representation in local l...
متن کاملSeniority and Incumbency in Legislatures
In this article, we elaborate on a strategic view of institutional features. Our focus is on seniority, though we note that this general approach may also be deployed to understand other aspects of institutional arrangements. We have taken the initial game-theoretic model of seniority of McKelvey and Riezman (1992), simplified it in order to characterize its fundamental implications, generalize...
متن کاملLegislatures as spin glasses
I present a method for partitioning legislatures into subsets of legislators that vote in a similar fashion by modelling legislatures as Potts spin glasses. I apply the method to find partitions of the UK House of Commons and the US Senate. I explain how the method is related to methods designed to find partitions of networks into densely connected subsets of nodes.
متن کاملGroseclose and Snyder in finite legislatures
The Groseclose and Snyder (1996) model is one of the best-known models of vote buying in legislatures. Although the logic of the model is compelling, it is not clear that its key propositions, derived in a continuous set-up, hold in finite legislatures. This is an important issue because many real-world legislatures are small and should be modeled as finite in order to make predictions on coali...
